Breaking Barriers: Unique Apps for Individuals with Visual Impairments (Part I)

mfarrell72

"Be My Eyes" is an app designed to assist individuals who are blind or visually impaired. This global and 24/7 accessible platform connects users with AI, sighted volunteers and professionals, offering support to enhance their independence.

Key Highlights:

  • Free and Unlimited: Be My Eyes is cost-free, available 24/7, and ensures user anonymity

  • Two Options: Users can either volunteer their sight or seek visual help

  • Common Uses: can be used for various everyday tasks, including reading home appliances, medication labels, product labels, matching clothes, navigating technology, and much more.

  • Multilingual: Volunteers assist in over 185 languages, ensuring diverse users get the support they need

  • For Ages 17+: Anyone aged 17 and above can volunteer

  • Live Video Assistance: Live video enables guidance during calls

Things to keep in mind:

*This app seems most applicable for individuals who have visual impairments, live alone (or spend long hours alone), and may not have support that they could facetime to get assistance.

*This app is not to be used as a mobility device (however, if that is something that you need, perhaps give Biped a look?)

For volunteers:

  • Be My Eyes embodies the concept of micro-volunteering, bringing individuals together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who are blind or visually impaired

  • From my perusal through reddit, volunteers have found these interactions to be very meaningful, even if it is a short one. The only downside I have found is that there are more volunteers than users. This means some volunteers have waited weeks to months for a call to come through
